Important Announcement for the 2023-2024 School Year

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

  • Starting April 8, 2024, students in 3rd-8th & 11th grades will only be considered for enrollment if they have completed the CAASPP tests at their school site.
  • All enrollment for the 2023-2024 school year will close on May 3, 2024. However, we may need to close enrollment sooner if testing schedule prevents additional new student meetings.
  • 2024-2025 school year applications are now open.

VERDUGO ACADEMY VISION AND MISSION
The vision of Verdugo Academy is to provide a high-quality education that addresses the unique potential of each student in a safe, engaging environment.

The mission of Verdugo Academy is to cultivate a safe, caring environment that promotes emotional and intellectual growth. Provide personalized instruction to engage students and address each student's unique needs and abilities. Stimulate creative and critical perspectives of the world that lead to success in college, career and life.

VERDUGO ACADEMY INDEPENDENT STUDY
1. We are an Independent Study program - students earn attendance based on the assignments they complete and submit. Per Independent Study law and prior to enrollment, the student, the parents/guardian, and the school must agree that Verdugo Academy is in the best interest of  the student.

2. We are a Home-Based Education program - courses and assignments are created and evaluated by Verdugo Academy teachers. Students complete assignments at home, with parental assistance and support using GUSD District approved curriculum.

THE ROLE OF THE VERDUGO ACADEMY STUDENT

Verdugo Academy students:

1. read each course syllabus and assignment log thoroughly and follow all assignment directions. 

2. complete all assignments with academic integrity and submit on time.

3. attend weekly in-person meetings scheduled with supervising teacher.

4. check daily for announcements and communication from VA teachers and staff.

5. attend instructional sessions.

6. take all course, district, and state exams, diagnostics, and assessments offered at Verdugo Academy

7. take personal responsibility for academic performance and maintain a minimum of 70% or higher in all courses.

8. responsible for any textbooks or materials checked out and are liable for the cost to replace lost or damaged items.

THE ROLE OF THE VERDUGO ACADEMY PARENT

K-5th grade parents:

1. are responsible for executing lesson plans with instruction, supporting and supervising the student while he/she completes the assigned work, and for ensuring that all assignments are completed appropriately by the student and submitted on or before the due date.

2. are required to attend weekly in-person meetings scheduled with supervising teachers.

3. provide transportation to and from school.

4. remain in contact with VA teachers and frequently check for communication sent by VA teachers and staff.

5. are responsible for any textbooks or materials checked out and are liable for the cost to replace lost or damaged items.

6. support VA goals, rules, and regulations.

6th-12th grade parents:

1. are responsible for supporting and supervising the student while he/she completes the assigned work and for ensuring that all assignments are completed appropriately by the student and submitted on or before the due date. 

2. are available to attend weekly in-person meetings scheduled with supervising teachers when invited.

3. provide transportation to and from school.

4. remain in contact with VA teachers.

5. are responsible for any textbooks or materials checked out and are liable for the cost to replace lost or damaged items.

6. support VA goals, rules, and regulations.

THE ROLE OF THE VERDUGO ACADEMY TEACHER

Verdugo Academy teachers:

1. design online and textbook courses that are GUSD board approved based on California State Standards, which are A-G UC/Cal State and NCAA approved for high school to meet California graduation requirements.

2. prepare students to work independently, follow directions, attend to details, and manage time.

3. provide students with weekly assignments from the designed coursework.

4. provide textbooks, links, and materials needed to complete assignments.

5. meet weekly with students to provide an individualized approach to each student.

6. maintain communication with parents and students.

7. proctor state, district, and school exams, diagnostics, and assessments.

8. evaluate student performance and provide final grades for all course work.

NEXT STEPS

1. Complete the application form.  

2. Gather supporting documents:

  • Student Transcript required for current 9th-12th grade students
  • Most recent report card for K-8th grade and incoming 9th graders
  • Middle/High School Counselor Checklist required for 6th-12th grade secondary students in GUSD

3. Submit Application and Documents by EMAIL, MAIL, or FAX

4. Once the application and all required documentation have been received, a Verdugo Academy representative will contact the parent/guardian to schedule a reading and writing assessment.
