Hello Verdugo Academy Students and Families!

Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year... even though school doesn't start until Wednesday! I'm still learning about the 2022-2023 school year, and I'll let you know everything you need to know as soon as possible. For now, the only assignment is for parents.

  • All parents must update and review Parent Portal and Annual Student Information Updates. Parents without accounts or having trouble logging should contact Mary Torossian at Daily (818-247-4508) https://q.gusd.net/production/parentportal

Students, enjoy the rest of your summer! :)

  • The Glendale Unified Online College and Career Academy is an innovative virtual school where students can earn free college credits towards their associates degree in business at the same time as completing high school. This is an amazing opportunity for motivated, creative, entrepreneurial students who thrive in a virtual school environment.

    Click here for more information.

Check out the latest GUSD news and information: https://www.smore.com/kbst6-glendale-unified-news-events

  • If you plan to attend Verdugo Academy next year but haven't filled out the commitment form yet, you need to do so right away. Otherwise, you will be enrolled at your previous school for 2022-2023.

This is the email that was sent to families:

    Greetings Independent Study Families,

You are receiving this email because your student is scheduled to return to their home school site for in-person learning in the 2022-23 school year. Your place was saved over this past year and your student will be placed in a class or classes (depending on the grade level) at the home school. You should be hearing from the school soon if you haven't already.
If you are still interested in participating in IS for the next school year please complete this form as soon as possible to reserve your spot/space in independent study

  • Parents, please read this message on Google Classroom about placement for spring semester.

Students must have above 70% in all classes to continue in Independent Study. Please check the weekly email from Edgenuity to see how your child is doing with their lessons. You can also check Google Classroom to see their weekly lesson plan and assignments.

  • Parents often ask how they can help with online learning. Here's some advice from Edgenuity, the platform we use in Independent Study.

  • For the latest news from GUSD, click here for the most recent newsletter.

  • Dear Independent Study parents,

Every year parents are asked to verify their income either on paper or online. This information is very important to our school since the funding from the government is dependent on this information. At this time, we have over 75% of our parents that have not completed this survey. Your information is confidential and will only be shared with our director of food services.

Why is this information so important?

Funding from the government is determined by how many parents are low-income. The federal and state governments provide extra money to schools with students from lower-income families.

What is the funding used for?

    • Chromebooks and other technology
    • Classroom materials
    • Tutoring
    • Intervention classes
    • And much more.

To complete this survey you need to log into the Parent Portal at parent.gusd.net. If you need assistance, please contact the office a Daily High School: 818-247-4805 and someone will walk you through the process.

Please complete the survey by Monday, October 18th. If you do not, we will be reaching out directly to you to assist.

    Thank you for your assistance,

    Dr. Christin Molano

  • Wow! Homeroom was GREAT this morning! It was so nice to see your faces! We'll see you again tomorrow at 8:30.

In today's homeroom meeting we talked about how to succeed in Independent Study. Some of our former students gave some advice, which was "don't procrastinate!" and "plan your day." They checked out this advice, too: Tips for Success in Independent Study.

If you'd like to see the Google Slides presentation from Orientation, here you go: Middle School Orientation

If you need help with passwords, click here.

  • Yesterday's orientation meeting was fantastic! I know that was a LOT of information. All of the teachers in Independent Study will work with you to ensure you are successful, so please don't worry if you're not entirely sure about everything. There are a lot of changes, and even the students who were here last year will be adjusting to the program.

If you're enrolled in my class, you need to add yourself to my Google Classroom (Class code: dks2wln). We will use this classroom for our one-on-one meetings.

All middle school students will need to join the homeroom classroom as well (Class code: gylbv37). We will use this classroom for our homeroom meetings, Monday-Thursday from 8:30-9:00.

  • Teachers are adding students to Google Classrooms today, and will try to email parents and students this afternoon. Our Middle School orientation meeting via Zoom is at 1:00 on Wednesday, August 18. The link was emailed already, and is posted in the Google Classroom.

  • Hello students and families!

We don't have our student rosters just yet, so your teacher likely hasn't contacted you just yet. Please be patient with us. We WILL get ahold of you as soon as possible. In the meantime, parents are encouraged to update your information in Parent Portal. From the GUSD website: Instructions on Returning Student Registration (Updating Contact, Emergency Contact Info, Electronic signing of District Forms) can be found by going to this link: Annual Student Information Update Help Guide Link

If Independent Study students would like to pick up meals, complete this google form. You must pre order the meal kits - 5 breakfasts and lunch meals.  Meal kits will be available for pick up at CVHS, GHS and HHS.  Administration will contact and confirm dates and times.  This kit is only for IS students.

  • 1) Edgenuity: We will be using Edgenuity for many courses this year. Please watch this video to get an idea of what it looks like.

    2) If you signed up for Independent Study but have changed your mind, please email independentstudy@gusd.net right away.

  • GUSD has emailed families with the following health and safety information: Back to School Health & Safety.

I sent this email today to families whose child is enrolled currently in my class:

    Hello Verdugo Academy Families!

It’s still summer, but I wanted to send you an early email to confirm that you are enrolled at Verdugo Academy for the upcoming school year. I’m sure you have many questions about what this year will look like. I do as well, and am looking forward to discovering what the district has planned.

This week, teachers are training and not meeting with families/students, and don’t worry, I can’t assign any work early. You’re still on summer vacation until August 18, so please enjoy your time! I will be in contact with information regarding the new school year as it comes to me; I will also be updating my teacher website as new information is available.

Again, please enjoy these last few days of vacation. You’ve earned it!

  • Graduation photos are available here: Daily and Verdugo Graduation 2021

  • Report cards were emailed to middle school students on June 10, 2021. If a student did not return books and materials by June 10, their report card was not released. You must bring them to Daily High School beginning June 14, then request your report card. Let the office know which school you will attend next year. If you have a Chromebook, return it to the district office next door to Daily High School.

Some parents and students have asked about enrichment opportunities over the summer. Here are some ideas:

Check Clever for links to Prodigy, coding lessons, typing lessons, language lesson, etc.

Check here for teen programs at the Glendale Library: https://www.eglendalelac.org/teenss://www.eglendalelac.org/teens. Also: READ! There is no such thing as too much reading. Here's a list of books for middle school kids as recommended by other kids.

Stay up-to-date on current events here: NewsELA

If it is safe to explore, visit some of the many interesting sites in Southern California. Here are a few ideas.

    • School resumes on August 18, 2021.

High school students will attend in-person orientation, which they signed up for in June, on either August 18 or 19.

Middle school students will attend an online orientation (Zoom) on August 18th at 1:00. I will email the link on August 16, as well as add you to our Google Classroom.

For all social science, we'll be using TCi. Here's a preview.

    Enjoy your summer!

For my new students, here's a recap about how to get started with your lessons:

    1) To get into the English work, go to ApexVS.com. The username and password are in the Verdugo Academy Documents part of the Classwork page.
    2) To get into math, go to SavvasRealize.com. Follow the math handout in Verdugo Academy Documents.
    3) Complete the work on the lesson plan for each week. Upload your work to the week's folder. So, all of your work for Week 18 should be uploaded to the Week 18 folder.
    4) For January's Curiosity Pursuit, you'll choose a topic. Then spend at least an hour exploring that topic. Fill in what you did on the calendar in Week 18. You'll turn the calendar in on Jan. 29th. There is no project to go with your Curiosity Pursuit this month.

Have fun! I'm cheering for your success. :)

    -Mrs. Buss

  • Reminder: The Verdugo Academy campus will be CLOSED for 2 weeks. If you have anything to drop off or pick up, you must do so by 3:00 on January 15.

  • Happy 2021, Verdugo Academy families! I hope your break was wonderful.

I emailed all middle school families to let you know we'll be doing "Curiosity Pursuits" this semester. This is simlar to Genius Hour or Passion Pursuits, but scaled down. This will be assigned with English. When we meet next week, we can discuss this further if you have questions.

On another note, several students still haven't picked up their new math textbooks and AR books. If you haven't, please return your previous math textbooks and AR book to the Verdugo Academy lobby and pick up the new books.

  • Students and Families,

As we finish up 2020 and move into the new semester soon, I just wanted to let you know I appreciate you!

This is a strange time, and everyday is both mundane but also brings new surprises. It can be stressful! We are all learning through this, even me! Thank you for being patient with me as we deal with new, unexpected issues.

I hope you feel valuable and important, because you are. The kids in this program are remarkable, and the parents are too. Studying independently is not easy! I am impressed and delighted every single day when I meet with you and see the assignments you've worked so hard on.

If you have some work to catch up on, you'll have plenty of time over the next few weeks, but please remember to enjoy the winter break. It is vitally important to rest and decompress. Listen to music. Enjoy your family. Get lost in a book or a video game. Play board games or do some Mad Libs. Go outside to see Jupiter and Saturn 'touch.' Take some time to not worry about school.

Take care, and I'll see you in 2021!

This resource was shared with me today: Distance Learning Guide. I thought it might be helpful for Verdugo Academy families. :)

From Khan Academy: Distance learning guide for parents and caregivers

This school year will be different from any other parents and caregivers have experienced before. Your kids may be returning to school on modified schedules or learning full-time at home. No matter where or when your child will be learning this year, we’re here to help. We’ve put together this parent and caregiver guide to share advice, tips, and resources to help your child get a #StrongStart to an uncertain school year. This guide covers three key components for successful sustained learning: setting up for success, keeping your kids motivated, and making time for personal well-being.

Beginning Week 7, the next book will be your child's choice. Naturally, it should be appropriate for their reading level. Please check here to ensure the book they choose is on Renaissance Learning/AR: https://www.arbookfind.com/.

  • The Glendale Library is offering an Information Savvy Challenge for teens:

Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Familiar words popularized by the rock band Queen from their 1975 hit song Bohemian Rhapsody. These lyrics can easily be applied to how many of us are feeling today, as we navigate the labyrinth of information accessible with a swipe of a screen, or a click of a button. With the sheer volume of information at our fingertips, how do we know what’s real, and what’s ‘fantasy’? How can we tell what’s legitimate news, and what’s fake, or at least misrepresented?

Take this challenge, comprised of three activity badges, to find out! For ages 12-17.

Once you complete the challenge, email Michael Whitehead, the Teen Services Librarian, at mwhitehead@glendaleca.gov, and include your full name and username/ contact information you used to sign up. From there, your completion of the challenge will be verified, and you will receive an email with a certificate confirming six hours of community service credit.

If you complete the challenge, send me the certificate, and I'll give you extra credit in social studies (for middle school) or history/government (in high school).

  • Middle school: I'm working on your lesson plans for the week - they'll be uploaded to your Google Classroom today. There are 2 English activities already in there, and Apex is open already.

  • I have created a Google classroom for every student. Please log in to your student GUSD email account for access. Also, today I emailed everyone with your weekly meeting day and time.

  • WELCOME BACK!

I emailed this to every student. If you haven't seen it yet, here you go!

    Hello Verdugo Families!

Wednesday, August 19, is the first day of school. Since you're a returning student, you're already set up to get started on your classes. I have enrolled everyone into 2 classes each on Apex. Beginning tomorrow morning, you can log in and get started!

Remember, you need to work at least 4 hours per weekday. Now is the time to schedule out your day. You are on independent study, so you don't have to sit down for 4 hours straight and work on these classes - You can break that up however you need to. You do need to continually make progress, however.

As you can imagine, we've been overwhelmed with inquiries about our program. Being a part of Verdugo Academy is special, and we're happy you're here! Please continue to study as expected so you can remain a part of the Verdugo Academy family.

On a personal note, I am now teaching middle school in addition to high school. I was quite sad to send several of my students to different teachers. They're all wonderful teachers though, so I know they're in good hands. If we get more middle school students, there is a chance we'll have to transfer you to a different teacher. I just wanted you to know ahead of time so there will be no surprises in the future.

    Some important information for students:

    • If you haven't done so already, please join my class on Remind: https://www.remind.com/join/amybussva.
    • We will not have face-to-face video meetings this week. I will get in contact with you soon regarding video meeting expectations.
    • All of our communication moving forward will be using your GUSD student email account, so log in daily to check it.
    • I have attached a syllabus for you to go over. Happy 2020-2021 school year, Verdugo Academy! :)

    Mrs. Buss

    Posted on Google Classroom.

  • Parents, check your email for the DocuSign I sent. After you fill it out, it will be emailed to the students to sign. After that, it comes to me. Please complete it ASAP, as it MUST be done before the first day of school. Thank you!

As you may already know, GUSD is set to start a new school year on August 19th. All returning Verdugo Academy students are required to fill out paperwork each year in order to be enrolled. I will be emailing your contract (to one parent and the student) and other documents via DocuSign. These documents will go to a parent, then the student, then back to me. Everything must be dated prior to 8/19/20.

  • Check your email today for information about summer school! You will need to access your student portal for information about your class. If you don't know how to log into your portal, click here for help. If you forgot your password, click here.

  • You made it to the end of the school year - congratulations! I'm so proud of our graduating seniors. Here are photos from today's graduation event. What a semester, huh?!

I'd like you to reflect on your effort this year. Did you study at least 20 hours each week? Did you set a schedule? Did you stick to it? Did you seek help when you needed it? Did you turn in your work on time? Did you successfully study independently?

I want you to succeed, and I'm here to support that. Remember: The most important element in your success is you. I want all of you to be solidly prepared for college or whatever career you choose after you graduate.

I am thrilled to have all of you as my students!

  • History students: Lin-Manuel Miranda is teaching US History on May 1 at 9 am (PST): Independent Studies. If you watch it, let me know!

From the YouTube description: This special edition of AP U.S. History class will cover topics on analyzing evidence, using source material, and providing historical context with special guest, Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator and original star of Broadway’s Tony-winning musicals, Hamilton and In the Heights.

APUSH studnets, you might also be interested in Ken Burns in the Classroom. From teacher Ken Olson: PBS’s new site “Ken Burns in the Classroom” is a fantastic repository for film clips, documents, images, and even lesson plans. For the APUSH exam, I would suggest starting with “The Roosevelts.” This wide ranging documentary covers key concepts in nearly 100 years of American History. Topics like Imperialism, Progressivism and Reform Movements, and changes in Presidential Power are central themes in the collection. My personal favorite is the “Powers of the Presidency” media gallery. It tackles foreign and domestic policy, Progressive and New Deal Era reforms, and the increased power of the President in a coherent and seamless manner.

  • Have you seen my teaching assistant? She made an appearance on today's video meetings. Here she is: Mrs. Buss' teaching assistant.

  • Welcome to Week 6 of the Coronavirus shutdown! Students, please fill out the Week 6 Check-In.

Regarding grading during the Covid-19 shutdown: "School work is not optional." (From the link: FAQ on Grading During Remote Learning.)

Remember, every student at Verdugo Academy is on a different path. Nobody starts and completes classes at the same time as any other student. We issue grades and credits when students complete a class, not at the end of the semester. So, you are expected to continue with your coursework to earn credits. Attendance is credited the same way as usual: By turning in coursework and completing classes.

Scroll down to see my post on March 23rd. You'll see: "WE ARE PREPARED! Each student already has the syllabi needed to complete their classes."

  • Students have asked me, do I have to keep working? Yes. If you'd like credits for the work you've done, you have to finish the class. Dr. Root called students last night with this message:

This is Dr. Root with a few updates and reminders. First of all I want to thank all of the students and their parents who are working hard trying to complete their assignments online, I know it is not easy. I also want to remind parents that you can check on your student's attendance and class progress in the parent portal or by emailing their teachers. Students must complete assignments to earn credit.

This Friday is a non- school day for students and teachers to commemorate the Armenian genocide, students will not be expected to engage with their teachers but if you are behind you can take advantage of the extra time to get caught up.

Graduation this year will be delayed until sometime in the fall at the earliest, but we are putting together an end of the year video to celebrate our 2020 graduates that we will share with everyone. If you are a 2020 graduate please try to participate when called upon.

Thank you and have a good evening.

  • On our weekly check-in (See April 20, below), I asked students: Being at home all. the. time is fairly boring, you've told me. It's not all bad though, right? Tell me something good that's happened because of the Coronavirus shutdown. Their answers:

The best thing that has happened during this lockdown is how the environment has had time to heal. The air is much cleaner and enjoyable!

    • ive been able to help my mom out with things
    • I’m focusing more so on my health because i have more time to my self at home. I’ve started working out and watching what i eat.
    • I’ve gotten to hang out with my friends more.
    • Ive learned how to bake good treats.
    • I can play 24/7 with all my friends and don't have to worry about anything.
    • I started playing Words With Friends
    • Lots of self reflection and growth
    • i keep sleeping
  • Three students completed a class today - CONGRATULATIONS!

  • Welcome to Week 5 of the Coronavirus shutdown! Students, please fill out this weekly check-in.

Several students and I had Whereby meetings today - it was so nice to see everyone! One student mentioned that he finished reading a novel and was ready for the Renaissance Test. To do so, log into your Clever account using your student GUSD email and password. The district and I have both posted a link to Renaissance Learning. Just click on the link, then search for your book to take the test.

  • I met with several students online today. My two assistants were ready to say hello - I posted their picture here. It is so enjoyable to catch up with students and say hello to their families!

It's Friday, which means tomorrow is the weekend. One of my students noted, "Saturday now doesn’t really feel like a Saturday it feels just the same as a Monday." I completely understand! For this reason, I suggest making a schedule to do schoolwork M-F, then take the weekend off. It gives meaning to weekends again.

  • Students, would you like to be a part of history?! Be a part of StoryCorps Connect! From their website:

    WHAT IS STORYCORPS CONNECT?
Developed in March 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, StoryCorps Connect is a first-of-its kind platform that enables you to record a StoryCorps interview with a loved one remotely using video conference technology.
The audio and a still photo from each interview goes into our archive at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. Your interview becomes part of American history, and hundreds of years from now, future generations will listen in. We think of StoryCorps as an ever-growing archive of the wisdom of humanity.

    ----------

If you would like to participate, let me know! I will include this interview as extra credit for history, English, government, or economics.

  • One of the questions on our weekly check-in (see the April 6, 2020 entry below) is: Read the NewsELA article For high school seniors, coronavirus brings a sad ending and unexpected lessons. What will you remember about the COVID-19 shutdown? The responses so far:

    • "I will remember how everything happened so fast. My friends staying home, the stock market crashing, and so much more. It is just really crazy that we are living history right now."
    • "How it completely changed the way our government worked, and proved that work can be self sufficient from home."
    • "I will remember that without taking care of our health, it will not end will. I will also remember all the great time I will have with my family by staying at home."
    • "I will hopefully remember everything that is happening. Especially the exponential growth of this virus day by day and that we had to cancel all schools to go into quarantine and learn online/facetime."
    • "Everyone staying at home"
    • "I'll remember that it was a tough time for the world, but there were positive aspects to it as well."
    • "I'll remember how life was like during a pandemic and a virus going on. And how we dealt with it."
    • "That it is very dangerous for the elderly"
    • "How we are all stuck in quarantine."
    • "I will remember waking up almost everyday to CNN and seeing the cases and death toll increase each day."
    • "I will remember to always cherish my time and memories. It is crazy what can happen in a short amount of time."
  • Welcome to Week 3 of the Coronavirus shutdown! Students, your week 3 assignments (in addition to your courses that you're already studying):

    1) Read this article on NewsELA: Bittersweet end to senior year. Take the quiz.

    2) Fill out our weekly check-in: Week 3 Check-In

  • Verdugo Academy students are independent learners - they're already good at remote learning! Students were assigned an article on Newsela ("Tips for Students Who are New to Virtual Learning") about working from home. I then asked them for suggestions for students who are new at remote learning so those kids can be successful, too. Here are some of the resposes:

    • “Always stay engaged. Being at home means a lot more distractions, but during learning time you need to focus and understand the information you are receiving.”
    • “A couple tips for students that are new to virtual learning are schedule your work time, study, and stay positive.”
    • “Always be attentive.  When you’re sitting in front of the laptop, it can be really easy to get bored and go on your phone! When on your phone you are focused on it, so you’re not listening or looking at what the teacher is saying or writing. It’s very important to be attentive especially during this time so you can be successful.”
    • “I would advise someone to make a schedule for their daily academic routine. It can help to write it down so it can be seen easily. It is also useful to keep track of their progress, so they don't worry about not knowing how much more work they need to do. For me, I write the percentage of completion for my courses on a board and update it daily.”
    • "Do not white knuckle your way through all the work because you will burn yourself out, then find yourself sitting in front of a screen doing nothing."
    • "Make sure you are keeping up with the work, getting behind can seriously mess up your scheduling."
    • "Make a plan and stick with it. It's hard in the beginning but it will get easier as you go along."
    • "Check your emails every day."
  • Every single day brings changes, and today is no different! You may have heard that school will remain online for the rest of the 2019-2020 school year. • Welcome to Week 2 of the Coronavirus shutdown! Students, your week 2 assignments (in addition to your courses that you're already studying):

    1) Read this article on NewsELA. There is an assignment attached to the article.

    2) Fill out our weekly check-in.

  • Someone asked an excellent question yesterday. They don't have a printer or scanner, so they asked how they can turn in their Apex work. My response: Write the answers on a piece of notebook paper by hand, and take a photo with a cell phone. You'll keep hard copies of your work until a future date.

  • Hello Verdugo Academy Families!

I hope you're all well. I've received work from several students this week and I'm working on getting assessments online. Please log into your GUSD email account to communicate with me; this is required to take quizzes/tests.

Let's talk about online resources. For math, chemistry, etc., some concepts can be confusing! Don't be afraid to search for Khan Academy videos. For example, here's an introduction to the quadratic equation: Khan Academy: Introduction to Quadratic Equations. Please share helpful videos in our Google classroom! What other resources do you find helpful?

    Talk to you soon!

  • I heard from several of you today via email and Remind, and I saw several of you reading the Coronavirus article on NewsELA. I'm so proud of you for being so flexible! I tell everyone I know, my students are motivated and driven to succeed.

  • Hi All!

I've heard from most of you by now. There's some confusion about what's going on, but that's ok - everyone's a little bit lost. We will transition into this slowly. For now, please check in here: Mrs. Buss' Class Week 1 Check-In (March 23-27). Also, see the links below to join our Google classroom and NewsELA class.

     Stay healthy and STAY HOME!

  • Verdugo Families,

Please check GUSD.net for the latest information on the COVID-19 closure. We are suspending our in-person meetings until at least May 5th. I sent an email this afternoon with details about how we'll move forward. That said, WE ARE PREPARED! Each student already has the syllabi needed to complete their classes. You are expected to email your work on your meeting day.

    To keep in contact:

    I'll talk to you soon!
