Welcome to the Verdugo Academy Program Overview

VERDUGO ACADEMY VISION AND MISSION
The vision of Verdugo Academy is to provide a high-quality education that addresses the unique potential of each student in a safe, engaging environment.

The mission of Verdugo Academy is to cultivate a safe, caring environment that promotes emotional and intellectual growth; provide personalized instruction to engage students and address each student's unique needs and abilities; stimulate creative and critical perspectives of the world that lead to success in college, career and life.

VERDUGO ACADEMY INDEPENDENT STUDY

  1. We are a home-based education program. Courses and assignments are assigned and evaluated by the student’s Verdugo Academy teacher. Students complete assignments at home with parental assistance and support using GUSD Board approved curriculum.
  2. We are an independent study program, meaning students earn attendance based on the assignments they complete and submit. California Ed Code states that prior to enrollment in an independent study school, the student, the parents/guardian, AND the school must agree that attending Verdugo Academy is in the best interest of the student, academically.

THE ROLE OF THE VERDUGO ACADEMY STUDENT

Verdugo Academy students:

  1. read each course syllabus and assignment log thoroughly and follow all assignment directions. 
  2. complete all assignments with academic integrity, submitting them on time.
  3. attend an in-person meeting with their supervising teacher, each week.
  4. check school email and all Google Classrooms each day, for announcements and communication from VA teachers and staff.
  5. attend required instructional sessions.
  6. take all course, district and state exams, diagnostics, and assessments, in person, at Verdugo Academy.
  7. take personal responsibility for academic performance, maintaining a minimum of 70% or higher in all courses.
  8. are responsible for textbooks or materials checked out to them, and are liable for the cost to replace lost or damaged items.

THE ROLE OF THE VERDUGO ACADEMY PARENT

K-5th grade parents:

  1. are responsible for executing lesson plans with instruction, supporting and supervising the student while he/she completes the assigned work, and for ensuring that all assignments are completed appropriately by the student and submitted on or before the due date.
  2. are required to attend weekly in-person meetings scheduled with supervising teachers.
  3. provide transportation to and from school.
  4. remain in contact with VA teachers and frequently check for communication sent by VA teachers and staff.
  5. are responsible for textbooks or materials checked out to them, and are liable for the cost to replace lost or damaged items.
  6. support VA goals, rules, and regulations.

6th-12th grade parents:

  1. are responsible for supporting and supervising the student while he/she completes the assigned work, and for ensuring that all assignments are completed appropriately by the student and submitted on or before the due date. 
  2. are available to attend their student’s weekly in-person meeting with the supervising teacher, when requested.
  3. provide transportation to and from school.
  4. remain in contact with VA teachers.
  5. are responsible for textbooks or materials checked out to their child, and are liable for the cost to replace lost or damaged items.
  6. support VA goals, rules, and regulations.

THE ROLE OF THE VERDUGO ACADEMY TEACHER

Verdugo Academy teachers:

  1. design online and textbook courses that are GUSD board approved to meet graduation requirements, based on California State Standards, and are UC/Cal State and NCAA approved.
  2. prepare students to work independently, follow directions, attend to details, and manage time.
  3. provide students with weekly assignments from the designed coursework.
  4. provide textbooks, links, and materials needed to complete assignments.
  5. meet weekly with students providing an individualized approach according to each student’s needs.
  6. maintain communication with parents and students.
  7. proctor state, district and school exams, diagnostics and assessments.
  8. evaluate student performance and provide quarter and final grades for the student’s coursework.

NEXT STEPS

  2. Gather supporting documents:
    1. For current GUSD students:
      • for K-6th grade students: most recent report card, and progress report (if applying mid-semester).
      • 7th-12th grade students who currently attend a GUSD school do not need additional paperwork.
    2. For students attending a school outside GUSD:
      • For K-6th grade students: most recent report card, and progress report (if applying mid-semester)
      • For 7th-12th grade students: academic transcript, and progress report (if applying mid-semester)
  3. Submit completed application and documents by EMAIL, MAIL, or FAX
  4. Once the application and any required documentation have been received, a Verdugo Academy representative will contact the parent/guardian to schedule a reading and writing assessment.
