Every year parents are asked to verify their income either on paper or online. This information is very important to our school since the funding from the government is dependent on this information. At this time, we have over 75% of our parents that have not completed this survey. Your information is confidential and will only be shared with our director of food services. 

Why is this information so important?

Funding from the government is determined by how many parents are low-income. The federal and state governments provide extra money to schools with students from lower-income families.

What is the funding used for?

• Chromebooks and other technology
• Classroom materials
• Tutoring
• Intervention classes
• And much more.

To complete this survey you need to log into the Parent Portal at parent.gusd.net. If you need assistance, please contact the office a Daily High School: 818-247-4805 and someone will walk you through the process.

Wow! Homeroom was GREAT this morning! It was so nice to see your faces! We'll see you again tomorrow at 8:30.

In today's homeroom meeting we talked about how to succeed in Independent Study. Some of our former students gave some advice, which was "don't procrastinate!" and "plan your day." They checked out this advice, too: Tips for Success in Independent Study.

Yesterday's orientation meeting was fantastic! I know that was a LOT of information. All of the teachers in Independent Study will work with you to ensure you are successful, so please don't worry if you're not entirely sure about everything. There are a lot of changes, and even the students who were here last year will be adjusting to the program.

If you're enrolled in my class, you need to add yourself to my Google Classroom (Class code: dks2wln). We will use this classroom for our one-on-one meetings.

All middle school students will need to join the homeroom classroom as well (Class code: gylbv37). We will use this classroom for our homeroom meetings, Monday-Thursday from 8:30-9:00.

Teachers are adding students to Google Classrooms today, and will try to email parents and students this afternoon. Our Middle School orientation meeting via Zoom is at 1:00 on Wednesday, August 18. The link was emailed already, and is posted in the Google Classroom.

Hello Verdugo Academy Families!

It’s still summer, but I wanted to send you an early email to confirm that you are enrolled at Verdugo Academy for the upcoming school year. I’m sure you have many questions about what this year will look like. I do as well, and am looking forward to discovering what the district has planned.

This week, teachers are training and not meeting with families/students, and don’t worry, I can’t assign any work early. You’re still on summer vacation until August 18, so please enjoy your time! I will be in contact with information regarding the new school year as it comes to me; I will also be updating my teacher website as new information is available.

Report cards were emailed to middle school students on June 10, 2021. If a student did not return books and materials by June 10, their report card was not released. You must bring them to Daily High School beginning June 14, then request your report card. Let the office know which school you will attend next year. If you have a Chromebook, return it to the district office next door to Daily High School.

GUSD high school students: Are you concerned about the environment? Here's your chance to get involved with local government to work on sustainability! Student Commissioner on Sustainability Commission

The Sustainability Commission was recently formed to make advisory recommendations to the City Council on how to promote progress toward sustainability and recommend priorities to promote regional leadership in sustainability.  General powers and duties shall include:​​​​​​​

1. Advise City Council on creating a comprehensive climate action and adaptation plan and a sustainability plan with measurable goals and benchmarks to ensure year-to-year progress. 
2. Advise City Council on Low Emissions Development Strategies supporting low carbon development initiatives in energy, transportation and mobility, waste, and the built environment.  Where economic goals align and balance with carbon reduction goals.
3. Advise City Council on Nature-Based Development Strategies protecting and enhancing healthy resilient ecosystems and healthy societies.  Initiatives may include prioritizing the natural environment's regeneration, and focusing on nurturing and protecting healthy air, water, and soil resources (blue green infrastructure).
4. Advise City Council on circular development initiatives prioritizing sustainable waste management, green procurement, recycling, and sustainable building design.
5. Advise City Council on development patterns that safeguard the natural support systems for human life to ensure that the natural and built environment in and around the City improves livability and promotes human health.
6. Seek inclusive participation of local and regional businesses, public interest groups in delivering solutions supporting sustainability goals. 

The Commission’s composition shall consist of five (5) voting members and two (2) Glendale students who shall be ex officio non-voting members and shall be at the high school level or above.

 Requirements

Ø  At least one of the student ex officio members must reside in the City of Glendale.
Ø  At least one of the student ex officio members must be attending high school or a higher educational facility within the City of Glendale.
Ø  Student ex officio members must have attained at least a junior standing in high school.
Ø  It is recommended that the student ex officio member also have some knowledge of sustainability and environmental sciences.

The City of Glendale and the Sustainability Commission are excited to have students' voices on Glendale's sustainability direction.

Timeline 

Ø  Interested candidates will be required to submit an application to the Sustainability Commission by May 14^th 2021.  See attached application form.
Ø  The two (2) student ex officio non-voting members will be appointed in July of each calendar year and will serve a term of one year.

In honor of Earth Day on April 22, 2021, Verdugo Academy's Green Club inauguration, would like to invite students and family members, within the same household, to help clean up our campus from 1:00pm-2:30pm.

For my new students, here's a recap about how to get started with your lessons: 

1) To get into the English work, go to ApexVS.com. The username and password are in the Verdugo Academy Documents part of the Classwork page.
2) To get into math, go to SavvasRealize.com. Follow the math handout in Verdugo Academy Documents.
3) Complete the work on the lesson plan for each week. Upload your work to the week's folder. So, all of your work for Week 18 should be uploaded to the Week 18 folder.
4) For January's Curiosity Pursuit, you'll choose a topic. Then spend at least an hour exploring that topic. Fill in what you did on the calendar in Week 18. You'll turn the calendar in on Jan. 29th. There is no project to go with your Curiosity Pursuit this month.

I emailed all middle school families to let you know we'll be doing "Curiosity Pursuits" this semester. This is simlar to Genius Hour or Passion Pursuits, but scaled down. This will be assigned with English. When we meet next week, we can discuss this further if you have questions.

On another note, several students still haven't picked up their new math textbooks and AR books. If you haven't, please return your previous math textbooks and AR book to the Verdugo Academy lobby and pick up the new books.

As we finish up 2020 and move into the new semester soon, I just wanted to let you know I appreciate you!

This is a strange time, and everyday is both mundane but also brings new surprises. It can be stressful! We are all learning through this, even me! Thank you for being patient with me as we deal with new, unexpected issues.

I hope you feel valuable and important, because you are. The kids in this program are remarkable, and the parents are too. Studying independently is not easy! I am impressed and delighted every single day when I meet with you and see the assignments you've worked so hard on.

If you have some work to catch up on, you'll have plenty of time over the next few weeks, but please remember to enjoy the winter break. It is vitally important to rest and decompress. Listen to music. Enjoy your family. Get lost in a book or a video game. Play board games or do some Mad Libs. Go outside to see Jupiter and Saturn 'touch.' Take some time to not worry about school.

Also, on December 9, the district is hosting a forum to help with mental health. I posted some information below this post.

UC Application deadline extension

The University of California's online application system experienced intermittent outages for three hours on Sunday, Nov. 29, that prevented many students from submitting their applications for fall 2021 undergraduate admissions and scholarships. 

In order to make sure students have time to thoroughly complete and review their application, UC has extended the application deadline for all freshman and transfer applicants and all campuses and majors to Friday, December 4 at 11:59 p.m. PST. 

We do encourage applications to be submitted as soon as possible. 

Please note, the UC Application Center’s hours have been extended as well:
November 30: 8 a.m. – midnight PST
December 1: 8 a.m. – 10 p.m.
December 2-3: 8 a.m. – 11 p.m. PST
December 4: 8 a.m. – midnight PST
December 5: 9:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. PST

CSU Application deadline extension

To better serve high school and community college students facing university admissions challenges caused by COVID-19, the California State University (CSU) will extend its fall 2021 priority application deadline to December 15, 2020 at 11:59 PM PST. The Cal State Apply Support hours have been extended as well.  

We do encourage applications to be submitted as soon as possible. 

If student and their family have experienced a significant change in income they may qualify for an application fee waiver appeal. Fee waiver appeals are handled by the individual CSU campuses. The student would need to contact each campus(es) they are interested in applying. Contact information for campuses can be found here.

Middle schoolers: I have updated all of your spreadsheets. If there's anything missing, have it ready by your next appointment.

High schoolers: I opened up more lessons on Apex so you can catch up/work ahead.

The PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs (SRL), in partnership with MediaWise, will host Face the Facts: Election 2020 Youth Town Hall, a one-hour, virtual youth town hall streaming on NewsHour digital platforms on October 6 at 7pm ET. The event will engage students and first-time voters on how to be prepared and better informed ahead of the November elections - to RSVP, register on Eventbrite.

Amna Nawaz, senior national correspondent and primary substitute anchor for the PBS NewsHour, will host. Special guests will also include Hari Sreenivasan, NewsHour senior correspondent and anchor for NewsHour Weekend, and Savannah Sellers, NBC News and MSNBC correspondent and co-host of Stay Tuned, NBC’s twice-daily news show on Snapchat and Instagram. Nawaz, Sreenivasan and Sellers are MediaWise Ambassadors who work with MediaWise — a digital media literacy project from the Poynter Institute — to teach people of all ages how to sort fact from fiction online.

The livestream will feature conversations with young people about how to spot election misinformation and engage in the democratic process as they’re making decisions about how to cast their vote. The Hispanic Heritage Foundation's (HHF) 2020 Youth Awards educational grants program is now accepting applications! Our 22nd Annual Youth Awards will award students who are in the graduating Class of 2021 with up to $1000 in educational grants to fund their higher education or a community-based project.
 
Recipients will be selected for their accomplishments in the classroom, community and for their excellence in various educational categories. Recipients will also be celebrated in virtual ceremonies.

With the sheer volume of information at our fingertips, how do we know what’s real, and what’s ‘fantasy’? How can we tell what’s legitimate news, and what’s fake, or at least misrepresented?

Take this challenge, comprised of three activity badges, to find out! For ages 12-17. 

Once you complete the challenge, email Michael Whitehead, the Teen Services Librarian, at mwhitehead@glendaleca.gov, and include your full name and username/ contact information you used to sign up. From there, your completion of the challenge will be verified, and you will receive an email with a certificate confirming six hours of community service credit.

If you complete the challenge, send me the certificate, and I'll give you extra credit in social studies (for middle school) or history/government (in high school).

Hello Verdugo Families!

Wednesday, August 19, is the first day of school. Since you're a returning student, you're already set up to get started on your classes. I have enrolled everyone into 2 classes each on Apex. Beginning tomorrow morning, you can log in and get started!

Remember, you need to work at least 4 hours per weekday. Now is the time to schedule out your day. You are on independent study, so you don't have to sit down for 4 hours straight and work on these classes - You can break that up however you need to. You do need to continually make progress, however.

As you can imagine, we've been overwhelmed with inquiries about our program. Being a part of Verdugo Academy is special, and we're happy you're here! Please continue to study as expected so you can remain a part of the Verdugo Academy family.

On a personal note, I am now teaching middle school in addition to high school. I was quite sad to send several of my students to different teachers. They're all wonderful teachers though, so I know they're in good hands. If we get more middle school students, there is a chance we'll have to transfer you to a different teacher. I just wanted you to know ahead of time so there will be no surprises in the future.

As you may already know, GUSD is set to start a new school year on August 19th. All returning Verdugo Academy students are required to fill out paperwork each year in order to be enrolled. These documents will go to a parent, then the student, then back to me. Everything must be dated prior to 8/19/20.

DAILY HIGH SCHOOL & VERDUGO ACADEMY
DRIVE-THROUGH GRADUATION DETAILS

Dear Daily High School and Verdugo Academy Students and Families,

Our DRIVE-THROUGH GRADUATION will be taking place on Wednesday, June 10th starting at 9:00 AM and ending at 11:00 AM.

The parade route will begin on Jackson Street near the entrance of the GUSD parking
lot. Cars will ENTER the GUSD parking lot from Jackson Street and turn left
(going through the balloon arch). After passing through the balloon arch, students
will pull up to the first table and return all GUSD equipment (Chromebooks) and
textbooks. They will then proceed down the parking lot to the next table where they
will receive their diploma from the Principal, Dr. Root, before making
their EXIT from the parking lot on Kenwood Street.

Please note the following based on the guidelines from the Los Angeles County
Department of Public Health:

• Only one car per family
• Stay in your car for the duration of the parade
• Wear a mask while car windows are down and when approached by a staff
• member
• School facilities will be closed

Student’s graduation packets will be placed in the trunk or passed to you through the
window.

Thank you once again for all of your support throughout this school year. We have
loved having your child at Allan F. Daily High School or Verdugo Academy. We
wish you and your graduating student much success. We look forward to celebrating
with you on June 10th.

APUSH studnets, you might also be interested in Ken Burns in the Classroom. From teacher Ken Olson: PBS’s new site “Ken Burns in the Classroom” is a fantastic repository for film clips, documents, images, and even lesson plans. For the APUSH exam, I would suggest starting with “The Roosevelts.” This wide ranging documentary covers key concepts in nearly 100 years of American History. Topics like Imperialism, Progressivism and Reform Movements, and changes in Presidential Power are central themes in the collection. My personal favorite is the “Powers of the Presidency” media gallery. It tackles foreign and domestic policy, Progressive and New Deal Era reforms, and the increased power of the President in a coherent and seamless manner.

Welcome to Week 6 of the Coronavirus shutdown! Students, please fill out the Week 6 Check-In.

Regarding grading during the Covid-19 shutdown: "School work is not optional." (From the link: FAQ on Grading During Remote Learning.) 

Remember, every student at Verdugo Academy is on a different path. Nobody starts and completes classes at the same time as any other student. We issue grades and credits when students complete a class, not at the end of the semester. So, you are expected to continue with your coursework to earn credits. Attendance is credited the same way as usual: By turning in coursework and completing classes. 

Scroll down to see my post on March 23rd. You'll see: "WE ARE PREPARED! Each student already has the syllabi needed to complete their classes."

Students have asked me, do I have to keep working? Yes. If you'd like credits for the work you've done, you have to finish the class. Dr. Root called students last night with this message:

This is Dr. Root with a few updates and reminders. First of all I want to thank all of the students and their parents who are working hard trying to complete their assignments online, I know it is not easy. I also want to remind parents that you can check on your student's attendance and class progress in the parent portal or by emailing their teachers. Students must complete assignments to earn credit.

This Friday is a non- school day for students and teachers to commemorate the Armenian genocide, students will not be expected to engage with their teachers but if you are behind you can take advantage of the extra time to get caught up.

Graduation this year will be delayed until sometime in the fall at the earliest, but we are putting together an end of the year video to celebrate our 2020 graduates that we will share with everyone. If you are a 2020 graduate please try to participate when called upon.

The best thing that has happened during this lockdown is how the environment has had time to heal. The air is much cleaner and enjoyable!

Several students and I had Whereby meetings today - it was so nice to see everyone! One student mentioned that he finished reading a novel and was ready for the Renaissance Test. To do so, log into your Clever account using your student GUSD email and password. The district and I have both posted a link to Renaissance Learning. Just click on the link, then search for your book to take the test.

I met with several students online today. My two assistants were ready to say hello - I posted their picture here. It is so enjoyable to catch up with students and say hello to their families!

It's Friday, which means tomorrow is the weekend. One of my students noted, "Saturday now doesn’t really feel like a Saturday it feels just the same as a Monday." I completely understand! For this reason, I suggest making a schedule to do schoolwork M-F, then take the weekend off. It gives meaning to weekends again.

Verdugo Academy students are independent learners - they're already good at remote learning! Students were assigned an article on Newsela ("Tips for Students Who are New to Virtual Learning") about working from home. I then asked them for suggestions for students who are new at remote learning so those kids can be successful, too. Here are some of the resposes: 

• “Always stay engaged. Being at home means a lot more distractions, but during learning time you need to focus and understand the information you are receiving.”
• “A couple tips for students that are new to virtual learning are schedule your work time, study, and stay positive.”
• “Always be attentive.  When you’re sitting in front of the laptop, it can be really easy to get bored and go on your phone! When on your phone you are focused on it, so you’re not listening or looking at what the teacher is saying or writing. It’s very important to be attentive especially during this time so you can be successful.”
• “I would advise someone to make a schedule for their daily academic routine. It can help to write it down so it can be seen easily. It is also useful to keep track of their progress, so they don't worry about not knowing how much more work they need to do. For me, I write the percentage of completion for my courses on a board and update it daily.”
• "Do not white knuckle your way through all the work because you will burn yourself out, then find yourself sitting in front of a screen doing nothing."
• "Make sure you are keeping up with the work, getting behind can seriously mess up your scheduling."
• "Make a plan and stick with it. It's hard in the beginning but it will get easier as you go along."
• "Check your emails every day."

Someone asked an excellent question yesterday. They don't have a printer or scanner, so they asked how they can turn in their Apex work. My response: Write the answers on a piece of notebook paper by hand, and take a photo with a cell phone. You'll keep hard copies of your work until a future date.
